I found “The story of an Hour” to be a great, easy, interesting read.
The impression I got about Mrs. Mallard is that she was stuck in a relationship that she wanted out of. I guess at that time divorce was not an option and therefore she just went on with her life without knowing any better. She didn’t enjoy the life she had. When the news of her husband’s death was revealed to her she mourned a bit and after was overwhelmed by a feeling of freedom.
I got the feeling that her marriage did not allow her to enjoy life. After the news of her husband’s death she starts to think that finally now she will live for herself. She finally started thinking of her life, her future.
I have to disagree with Gaiane on the ending. I didn’t find it funny, but ironic. The person believed to be killed, lived and the person who just started to plan her life dies. I guess she died form the excitement of her dreams.

I meant funny in a dark funny kind of way.....and it is ironic... i just thought it to be slightly comical..
Hmm--yes, irony does have this darkly humorous side--anyway, I agree--definitely ironic
I agree with you! I believe also that she was unhappy with her marriage and the news of her husband excited her. When she found out he was still living she died from the excitment of thinking he was dead but soon found out he was still alive. Her dreams were crushed..good point!
I don't think that she necessarily couldn't get a divorce or really wanted out of her marriage, but she just wasn't necessarily enjoying herself like she may have had she been a single woman. Many married people have days that they wish they were single and "free" but still live their lives as married "unfree" people.
At these times, women were not allowed to get married. It was a done deal, so his death was her only way out. See, it was consorted to be Taboo if she remarried, so she was happy to spend the rest of her life spending her "late" husbands money.
